• According to Legends, it is believed that Lord Shiva told Goddess Parvati the secret of Shri Amarnathji’s cave creation. A pair of pigeons eavesdropped on their conversation. They learned about the secret and became immortal. These pigeons later made this cave their home. A lot of pilgrims on Amarnath Yatra have witnessed these pigeon pair during the trek before the Ice-Lingam – the Symbol of Shiva.

• There is another legend that tells the story of a Muslims shepherd named Buta Malik. A saint once gave him a sack of coal. When he reached home, he discovered the sack had gold instead. Overjoyed, Buta Malik rushed to meet the saint to thank him but discovered a cave on the same spot he met the saint. This has since then become the place of pilgrimage.

• Another legend tells the story of Kashap Reshi who drained the Kashmir Valley of water. The lingam and the cave were discovered by Brejish Reshi. When folks heard about the lingam, Shri Amarnathji became the Lord Shiva’s home and the pilgrimage site.
